Genocide Trial

The trial for charges of genocide against one of Guatemala’s ex military dictators, Jose Efrain Rios Montt.   Survivors have been waiting for more than 30 years for the Guatemalan courts to hear the testimonies.

In May 2013, Ríos Montt was convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity carried out against the Maya Ixil indigenous ethnic group. This was the first time in global history that a former head of state has been convicted of war crimes by a court in his own country.

The verdict was suspended 10 days later by the Constitutional Court of Guatemala on the grounds of procedural technicalities during the trial, but genocide survivors of Guatemala argue that for them, the verdict remains valid.  However a court declared that Ríos Montt can still be tried, represented by his lawyers. The new genocide trial is currently in process in Guatemala.
